If you’ve been following along, you’ll have noticed that the bulk of my pieces so far read like old work. Ideas from months ago, and you might wonder what the point is in that. Why not just tell you the answer.
Well, like me, there are many others out there wondering the same questions about the same platforms and are just as clueless as I am about where to go and how to start. Given that I’ve been journalling daily for years now (Eight and counting), I’m pretty good at documenting things, so I figured why should my start on Substack be any different?
While not quite “months” ago, my contemplation surrounding platforms has been ongoing ever since I learnt of Medium, Substack, Patreon and others.

I’ve been writing each of these entries ahead of actually opening the account online, just so that whichever platform I choose, I will have a small starting library of content to work from. The trouble that I’m facing at the moment is figuring out which platform to choose. You, the reader will know by the time you open this; I at the time of writing, am a bit lost.
Originally I wanted to go to Patreon, but was discouraged percentage cut they take from creators, and hearing about funds being withheld depending on this or that, it’s not very inviting when the stories speak negatively about a platform. I then discovered Ko-Fi, which apparently costs a fixed fee per month and as a direct competitor to Patreon, has similar, if not better features. Of course this last part is purely speculation because I never signed up to Patreon in the end, Ko-Fi, yes, but don’t go looking for me there, I’m one surge of motivation away from deleting my account.
But then the other day I was reading on Medium about Substack, which also serves this sort of purpose—while I thought it was a newsletter only kind of website at first, turns out it caters to podcasts and stories as well. So maybe I should just go there instead (Hiii).
Choices choices choices!

At the end of the day, the biggest thing for me is community and whether those on the platform would resonate with my work. Having had nothing short of a positive experience to my work on Medium, and having similar friends/faces seen on Substack, my motivation for here is pretty high.
No expectations, though. It is, after all, the internet.
But let’s see what happens!
Oh and by the way, I finished my set up:
I opted to switch out the pop filter on my SM7B from the standard to this big puffy one, simply because my room has a lot of reflections and is prone to boominess/muddiness in the mix.
