The Demon in the Basement
Confronting my inner demon to help navigate adversity

I’ve always wanted to write lyrics, and given my obsession with metal, I wrote this piece to align with the lesser known, slower, and darker sub-genre of doom. As for the subject matter, it’s based off my recent experience in the emergency ward.
Between the hours of two and eight
Locked from sight under buckle and chains
Growing restless the barking rises
Beneath the floorboards, it still remains
I hold my breath to keep composure
My heartbeat ruptures on the inside
Breaking on through it forces a fight
Brawling for peace, like Jekyll and Hyde
Weakened and down, anxiety climbs
I am left begging for sedation
Snatching me up within its tight grasp
It’s holding me in subjugation
Scared to the bone, I whimper and cry
My soul now closer to its demise
Hearing its breath consistently calm
Wishing to be still, I agonise
Plunge it down my oesophagus
Make me choke on the life you give
Drag me from the sarcophagus
Bring me favour, I wish to live
Scratching past the surface
My strength lies deep within
It takes confronting the demon
To build up my resilience
Guarding the door to my consciousness
It protects me from cruel intrusions
Within its shadow, I still feel brave
Our combined efforts stop occlusions
Summoning courage drives away fear
Recognise that you are not alone
Life goes on in spite of circumstance
People in fact, are accident-prone
Plunge it down my oesophagus
Make me choke on the life you give
Drag me from the sarcophagus
Bring me favour, I wish to live
I plan to take it in my stride
Within my strength, I can confide

Yoh, this was powerful! And this stanza is outstanding:
"Plunge it down my oesophagus
Make me choke on the life you give
Drag me from the sarcophagus
Bring me favour, I wish to live"
Love your voice! Thank you for sharing. It reads like music!
