Got a short one for today…
Analysing my desk layout and optimising free space as much as possible ensures that there are no loose cables anywhere that could be construed as messy.
I recall reading something somewhere years ago (so not very trustworthy in this case) that “creative people thrive in chaos”. Even in reflection I can’t help but feel that that statement holds very little truth. At least for me it doesn’t.
I’m a tidy man. Everything has a place… including the dust that sits on my bathroom shelf. I like to be minimalistic, but I’m not over the top about some things. I do my best to keep things clean, though I will admit that often dust collects in areas that should be better kept.
There’s only one of me and I’m usually busy. But all the common areas, counters, faucets and floors will always be clean and tidy. Dust is the bane of my life, but not this post!
I wanted to find the best way to have all my cables and preamp hidden from sight so that my desk could be as empty as possible. More so, it’s a standing desk that’s all fancy going up and down with the push of a button—what a time to be alive—so the cables had to be packed in such a way it didn’t interfere with any of the moving parts.

It’s all sorted and connected. I’ve been pondering how to make my desk as clutter-free as possible so that the cables don’t take over. It’s still not ideal at the moment, but better than nothing.
I plan to experiment with having the in-line preamp hidden underneath my desk and sitting in the cable holder, but only if it’s apparent that I won’t need to disconnect it… ever.
It’s a little all over the place, not by much I will admit, but hiding the CL-1 will make it a lot neater. Never mind the random lightning cable though, had to have somewhere for my work phone to charge and the bedroom for that isn’t an option. I’m happy that Apple finally switched to USB-C so at least my personal phone cable can double as the charger for literally everything else too.
While you could still argue there are annoying loose cables, keeping it to a minimum is perfect for me. Just the USB-C to go into the computer and male-XLR into the preamp. Two clicks and we’re in business. Easy-peasy.
